him".

I am most grateful to Neil Drum & Pete Thomas for allowing me to use
verbatim the following extract from their superb 623 page book "A District
at War - Irlam & Cadishead's Part in the Great War", an incredibly detailed
and comprehensive book that is not only a credit to them, but a magnificent
memorial to the WW1 men of that district.

Served with the 19th (Service) Battalion (4th City), The Manchester
Regiment, 21st Brigade, 30th Division.

William was born in Flixton, the son of George and Charlotte Thompson, who
later lived at 58 Gloucester Road, Urmston. William resided in Urmston and
worked in Irlam at the CWS Soap Works. He saw service on the Western Front
until being fatally wounded and dying of these injuries on 18th April 1917,
aged 22. He is commemorated on the Irlam Soap Works panel of the CWS War
Memorial, Balloon Street, Manchester and the War Memorial in St Michael's
Church, Church Road, Flixton. He is not listed on the Irlam and Cadishead
