Born during the June quarter 1916 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref:
8c/1044, the son of William & Ellen Turkington (formerly Stewart, nee
Erwin).  Ellen was the mother of George Stewart who was killed in WW1 - see
"Stretford WW1".

The 2/5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers were re-formed in September 1939
in the Bury Drill Hall.  From 1941 - 1943 the battalion served at Newry,
Northern Ireland.   From March 1943 to June 1944 the battalion was
stationed at Folkestone and Ditchling, Sussex.  In June they joined the
Normandy Campaign.

The battalion sailed from Newhaven on the 26th June 1944.   After
disembarking at Courcelles sur Mer, they concentrated at La Haiserie on the
29th June.  On the 6th July they moved to Bouanville and then to Auguuery. 
 They attacked at Malon and La Folie on the 8th July suffering heavy
casualties - 10 officers and 111 other ranks were killed, wounded or
missing - one of those killed was James.
