Born during the December quarter 1926 in the Barton on Irwell R.D. - ref:
8c/881, the son of Henry Austin and Nora Kathleen Gibbons (nee Smith).

The S.S. Lackenby was built in 1928 and had a GRT of 5112 tons.   She was
torpedoed in the Atlantic, south of Cape Farewell in position 55.00 N -
37.50 W by U-Boat, U-624, part of the 'Haudegan' (Broadsword) patrol group
of 21 U-Boats.

She was on voyage from Tampa to London, via New York and Loch Ewe, with a
cargo of phosphate - a "straggler" from Convoy SC117, comprising 21 ships. 
  The entire crew of 39, plus five gunners were lost.   U-624 was sunk two
weeks later.
