Born during the March quarter 1882 in the Altrincham R.D. - ref: 8a/185,
the son of George & Sarah Arrowsmith.

1881 Census - James' parents were residing at the "Packet House" P.H.
Broadheath.   Sarah would have been pregnant with James then, so that is
probably where he was born.

1891 Census - NOT LISTED.   His family were residing at the "Packet House,
Broadheath, Altrincham.   His father - George Arrowsmith - Married - aged:
36 - occ: Farmer & Beerhouse Keeper - born: Dunham Massey.   Also - Sarah
Arrowsmith - Wife - aged: 37 - born: Dunham Massey.   Plus his younger 11
month old sister - Margaret Arrowsmith and 2 domestic servants.    No trace
of James nor his younger 2 year old brother -George Arrowsmith.  Brother
George was residing with his paternal farmer grandparents on Sinderland
Road, but again, no trace of 9 year old James.

1901 Census - "Packet House P.H, 1 Navigation Road, Altrincham.     Son -
aged: 19 - occ: Iron Moulder - born: Broadheath, Altrincham.     Head of
household - George Arrowsmith - Married - aged:47 - occ: Beerhouse Keeper -
born: Dunham, Cheshire.   Also - Sarah Arrowsmith - Wife - aged: 48 - born:
Dunham, Cheshire.   Plus 2 siblings and 2 domestic servants.

His father died on the 14th April 1904

1911 Census - 17 Manchester Road, Altrincham.    Son - aged: 29 - occ: Iron
Moulder - born: Bollington, Cheshire.    Head of household - Sarah
Arrowsmith - Widow - aged: 63 - occ: Private Means - born: Bollington,
Cheshire.    Plus 1 brother - 1 sister and 1 brother-in-Law and 1 domestic
servant.

The 03/11/1916 edition of the local newspaper reports that he has been
critically wounded and is now in a base hospital suffering from gunshot
wounds to his legs and back.    Eventually died from wounds received on the
Somme.  The 10/11/1916 edition reports his death.

It also states that his late father, John Arrowsmith (don't know where CWGC
gets George from ?) was the licensee of the Old Packet House for 50 years.

Mr. Chamberlain for whom he worked was an Accountant and Estate Agent and
also his brother in law.

Unmarried, he enlisted in October 1914 and had been in continuous fighting
for 12 months.   He was wounded on the 24th October 1916 on the Somme and
died 2 weeks later.

His widowed Mother, aged 70, lived at Plamont, Hartford with his sister and
brother in law - Mr. & Mrs. Chamberlain.   His brother was a Lieutenant in
the RNR and was in foreign service at a wireless station.   He also had two
sisters serving abroad as nurses - one at an Army Hospital the other at a
Naval Hospital. 

M.I. - "To the glory of God, England and freedom.  R.I.P."

Probate granted at Chester on the 12th October 1917 to Ernest Chamberlain
and his brother - George Anthony Arrowsmith.   The record states that he
was serving with the 11th Bn Cheshire Regiment when he died on the 5th
November 1916 in the 14th General Hospital, France.  His Estate was valued
at £3,088. 14s. 4d.
