Flying with 90 Sqn, they took off at 2015hrs from R.A.F. Tuddenham, Suffolk, in a Lancaster Mk.I, No. HK604 WP-G on a bombing operation over Kiel. The aircraft crashed into the sea - 3 bodies were washed ashore, the remaining four crew are commemorated at Runnymede. This particular Lancaster was built by Vickers Armstrong and only delivered to R.A.F. Tuddenham on the 11th August. Commemorated on the private family gravestone in Christ Church Churchyard, Timperley, which states that he was a Flight Sergeant. His father, James E. died 08/06/1940 aged 59 years and his mother who re-married to become Maggie Greenhalgh died 02/04/1968 aged 79 years; she was cremated. |
