Born on the 18th November 1880, the son of Daniel & Eliza MacDonald (nee Smith). The birth being registered under the name of David McDonald during the December quarrter 1880 in the Salford R.D. - ref:8d/174. His parent's marriage was registered under the name 'McDonald' as well. 1881 Census - 23 Hazel Street, Salford. Son - aged: 4 months - born: Salford. Head of household - Daniel MacDonald - Married - aged: 24 - occ: Farm Labourer - born: Birmingham, Warwickshire. Also Eliza MacDonald - Wife - aged: 32 - born: Oakengate, Shropshire. Plus 1 elder brother. 1891 Census - Lister Street, Pendleton, Salford. Son - aged: 10 - born: Salford. Head of household - Elizabeth MacDonald - Widow - aged: 38 - occ: Charwoman - born: Willington, Shropshire. Plus 5 siblings. 1901 Census - 11 Pheonix Street, Pendleton, Salford. Step-son - aged: 20 - occ: Wine Merchant's Assistant - born: Salford. Head of household - Henry Bell - Married - aged: 45 - occ: Stone Mason's Lanbourer - born: West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Also Eliza Bell (his mother) - Wife - aged: 49 - born: Oaken Gates, Shropshire. Plus 3 younger siblings. 1911 Census - 5 Frank Street, Pendleton, Salford. Also Eliza Bell (his mother) - Wife - aged: 62 - born: Wellington, Shropshire. Married Gladys Wallis during the September quarter 1934 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/1676. Gladys was also killed in this incident. 1939 National Registration - 284 Oxford Road, Manchester. David MacDonald - Married - born: 18th November 1880 - occ: Fish Fryer. Gladys MacDonald - Married - born: 23rd January 1899 - occ: Fish Fryer & Unpaid Domestic Duties. The bomb site is shown on the Manchester Bomb Maps - 104 part 15 (University of Manchester Library). This shows that an H.E. bomb dropped on the corner of Oxford Road and Ducie Street - on the corner property - No. 284 (a direct hit). Ducie Sreet is no longer there and it is now the site of a car park. Nos. 284 to 292 all had to be demolished and post war Nos. 294 & 296 have been demolished, but the row of shops Nos. 298 to 310 opposite Grafton Street are still there. Three properties on the other side of Oxford Road opposite No. 284 also had to be demolished due to this incident and the Methodist Church next to them was damaged, as was a hotel on the other side Ducie Street.
