Born during the March quarter 1895 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/763, the only son of John George & Frederica Shepley (nee Baldwin). 1901 Census - 21 Alderley Road, Flixton. Son - aged: 6 - born: Urmston. Head of household - John G. Shepley - Married - aged: 33 - occ: Railway Clerk - born: Manchester. Also - Frederica Shepley - Wife - aged: 32 - born: Keighley, Yorkshire. His mother Frederica Shepley died in late 1901 - aged: 32. She died in childbirth with their daugher who was named Frederica after her. 1911 Census - 21 Alderley Road Flixton. Son - aged: 16 - occ: Junior Clerk - born: Urmston. Head of household - John G. Shepley - Widower - aged : 42 - occ: Railway Clerk - born: Manchester. Plus 1 domestic servant - widow Mary Myers - Widow - born: Dalton in Furness, Lancashire. WO 363 - Enlisted at Manchester on the 4th September 1914. He was employed as a Buyer's Assistant and was aged: 19 years, 8 months. He was 6 feet 1 inch in height and weighed 144 lb. His chest measurements were 34 1/2 - 36 1/2/ inches. His complexion was Fresh, eye were Blue and he had Fair hair. Religion given as Church of England. Posted to France on the 8th November 1915. Promoted unpaid Lance Corporal on the 20th February 1915 and was paid w.e.f. the 5th June 1915. Promoted to the rank of Corporal on the 28th December 1915. Severely reprimanded for Neglect of Duty on the 27th June 1916 - the day this was being recorded on his record he was killed. Death reported in the 25/07/1916 edition of the Manchester Evening News. The report states that he had been wounded in the wrist whilst leading his men. He was on his way to a dressing station when he was killed. There is also a small portrait photograph of him. Listed as a Private on St. Michael's Memorial. Commemorated in the Manchester Regiment City Battalions 1914-1916 Book. Listed as "Assistant Scoutmaster" - 1st Flixton Troop, on the Urmston & Flixton Scout's War Memorial. His father married Mary A. Dingle in 1918 and they resided at 62 The Downs, Altrincham.
