They took off at 17.35 hours from RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, in a Lancaster Mk I - No. W4268 GI-A, to bomb Berlin. Shot down by a night fighter over Germany, they crashed at Neu Gaarz, where they were originally buried. At the end of hostilities, their remains were transferred to the Berlin 1939-45 Cemetery.
