| Born during the June quarter 1915 in the Prestwich R.D. - ref: 8d/552, the son of Alfred & Mary Elizabeth Kirkby (nee Holt). H.M.S. Barham was torpedoed at 16.30hrs on 25/11/41, off the Libyan Coast in position 32.34N 26.24E by 'U.331". It capsized and blew up within five minutes 862 men lost - 450 rescued. It was a 'Queen Elizabeth' Class Battleship of which 5 were built between 1913 & 1915. They had a displacement of 31,000 tons and a complement of 1,200 personnel.
