Born on the 11th March 1916, the birth being registered during the June quarter 1916 in the Barton upon Irwell R.D. - ref: 8c/1044, the son of William & Ellen Turkington (formerly Stewart, nee Erwin). 1921 Census - No Trace of the family in 1921. 1939 National Regstration -1149 Eleventh Street, Trafford Park, Manchester. W. Turkington - Born on the 4th June 1879 - Married - occ: Storekeeper (Unemployed). Ellen Turkington - Born on the 20th November 1877 - Married - occ: Unpaid Domestic Duties. Robert Turkington - Born on the 20th December 1907 - Single - occ:Pneumatic Rivetter. James F. Turkington - Born on the 11th March 1916 - Single - occ: Bookkeeper. Sarah E. Turkington - Born on the 1st June 1910 - Single - occ: Gut Cleaner - also an A.R.P. First Aider. The 2/5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers were re-formed in September 1939 in the Bury Drill Hall. From 1941 - 1943 the battalion served at Newry, Northern Ireland. From March 1943 to June 1944 the battalion was stationed at Folkestone and Ditchling, Sussex. In June they joined the Normandy Campaign. The battalion sailed from Newhaven on the 26th June 1944. After disembarking at Courcelles sur Mer, they concentrated at La Haiserie on the 29th June. On the 6th July they moved to Bouanville and then to Auguuery. They attacked at Malon and La Folie on the 8th July suffering heavy casualties - 10 officers and 111 other ranks were killed, wounded or missing - one of those killed was James.
