The Empire Impala had a gross register tonnage of 6,116, a cargo ship it was on charter to the British Ministry of War Transport. South-east of Cape Farewell, on the 07/03/43, travelling from the U.S to the U.K., she stopped to pick up survivors from the cargo liner, S.S. Egyptian, that had just been torpedoed by U-230. When she, in turn, was torpedoed by U-221 and sank in position - 48N 23.30W. There is no record of the numbers of crew/passengers lost.  | |||
